Wealthy used to own homes or would visit with friends and aquaintances whose own homes were just as opulent. Only the poor would stay in coaching inns and guest houses. Boarding houses existed for those who had limited means as did lodgings in people’s homes. Gentlemen might stay at a club in town or with a reciprocal club that had agreed terms.
Hotels were an unknown phenomenon until David La and then the Savoy.

The Grand Dame of Parisian hotels, the Hôtel George V is an art deco masterpiece that first opened in 1928.
