Casa Mira is one of Madrid’s renowned confectioners and purveyors of traditional handmade candies, pastries and treats, known locally as a Turronería. The brand was founded by Luis Mira in 1842, a native of Jijona – the traditional home of turrón nougat – and is managed by his descendants today.

Mira initially began selling from a small market stall before establishing his famous shop on Carrer de San Jeronimo in 1855 where it remains to this day. In-store, Casa Mira offers its full range of confectionery and sweets alongside a traditional café serving various baked goods.

A visit to Casa Mira is a step back in time, as the shop retains its vintage, elegant decor, with old wood and glass cases, and mahogany-panelled walls, redolent with old-fashioned lighting and seasonal decorations. The store’s old-world charm has ensured a loyal local customer base whilst also appealing to tourists and visitors with the store being a must-visit landmark on Madrid’s cityscape.

The store maintains its historic frontage and interior adding to the brand’s charm and serving as a reminder of the company’s long and illustrious history as a confectioner of repute.

Indeed, such was Mira’s reputation, that his confectionery house became a purveyor to the Royal Court, receiving warrants from Queen Isabel II, Amadeo de Saboya, Alfonso XII, and Alfonso XIII.

Casa Mira’s products are handmade, true to their historic proprietary recipes, using traditional methods and high-quality, natural ingredients. They are particularly famous for their marzipan, candied fruits and biscuits as well as their legendary nougats.

Key specialties include:

  • Turrón:
    The classic varieties are Turrón de Jijona (soft, smooth nougat) and Turrón de Alicante (hard, brittle nougat), but they also offer toasted egg yolk, chocolate, hazelnut, and other varieties;
  • Marzipan:
    Highly regarded, especially in shapes like the large Anguila (eel) or Glorias de Jijona (marzipan and egg yolk pastries);
  • Candied Fruits (Fruta Escarchada):
    Including candied oranges, tangerines, pears, and watermelon;
  • Polvorones:
    Traditional and crumbly shortbread biscuits that are particularly popular at Christmas; and
  • Yemas de Nuez:
    An iconic walnut and egg-yolk pastry treat.

Casa Mira is popular globally, particularly amongst the Spanish diaspora. Their treats are especially in demand at Christmas, with many Madrid citizens sending the nostalgic favourites to family members overseas.

We heartily recommend a visit to this legendary emporium if you are in town or, if you have a sweet tooth that cannot wait, visit their online store to indulge in all manner of delights.
