JAMES TAYLOR & SON: A LEGENDARY LONDON SHOEMAKING FIRM

James Taylor & Son is a renowned British bespoke shoemaker that has been crafting exquisite footwear since 1857. Over the years, they have established themselves as one of the most respected shoemakers in London, renowned for their impeccable craftsmanship, unparalleled comfort, and timeless elegance. The house was founded by a well-regarded Norfolk shoesmith of the same name, who established himself in London, bringing with him that great shoemaking tradition for which that region of England between Northampton and Norfolk is so famous.

Taylor & Sons (as the firm is more commonly known), was first established on London’s Great Portland Street and, after many years, grew to become a very well-known bespoke shoemaker, crafting custom fine shoes for the ladies and gentlemen of London society. Indeed, the firm was considered one of the great “Four Firms” that were the preferred makers to the rich and famous. Their peer firms being Hook Knowles & Co and Joeseph Box (both makers by appointment to the Crown) and also Charles Moykopf, a legendary bootmaker. These three other firms have since been acquired by and absorbed into the great house of John Lobb. These firms operated as a guild of sorts, being key members of the West End Master Bootmakers Association. Over the years, through consolidation, amalgamation and closure, the industry has contracted leaving only a handful of London makers surviving today. James Taylor & Son is now one of only four remaining members of The West End Master Bootmakers Association.

The firm continues the tradition of bespoke bootmaking and shoemaking from it’s Paddington location (having moved from Great Portland Street some fifty years ago). The firm’s client book still includes a great many of London’s celebrated and oldest names. James Taylor & Son’s repertoire encompasses a wide range of styles, from classic oxfords and elegant loafers to stylish boots and bespoke sneakers. They also cater to a diverse clientele, including discerning gentlemen, sophisticated ladies, and even royalty. In more recent years, the firm has also carved out a niche serving the needs of clients with specific footwear needs owing to health complications.
